Artist Statement:

I have been fascinated by art since grade school when my family took a trip to the Art Institute of Chicago. I stood in front of Seurat’s Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and was mesmerized by all the dots of color. I didn’t start painting seriously until the death of my sister. I started painting as therapy to bring some joy back in to my life. I paint mainly in watercolor on Yupo and soft pastel.

This work was about capturing the soul of the animal. I chose soft pastel on sanded paper and a close perspective to be able to show the texture of the animal and the depth of the eyes. I wanted to make the viewer wonder how this animal feels, what is it like to be trapped in a zoo because your species is endangered, vulnerable and threatened in the wild.

Meet the artist! There will be a reception from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, in our Children’s Meeting Room.
