Susan Rider: The Bird and Flower Series

The connection of the bird and flower threads these paintings together. The flower is rooted and the bird flies away, so the relationship can symbolize any parting or change, depending on one’s experiences. For instance, the physical and the spiritual, a life chapter ending and a new one beginning, loved ones moving away or passing on.

The subject matter in this series has its roots in my work from the 1970’s in Marin County, California. (Seagulls, hawks, rolling hills, flowers, ocean, etc.) It has the tablet page (lines) theme that has appeared in my paintings for many years and the awkward, childlike drawing that I hope for in my work. Sometimes I hold the brush or other tool in my left hand, and it helps to reach that childlike, non-judgmental part of the subconscious. It’s also fun to just draw and let things become somewhat realistic. The combination of these two approaches creates a tug-of-war, and in this struggle, each painting finds itself.
