A retrospective exhibition of over 45 paintings by Arizona artist Effie Anderson Smith (1869 – 1955), selected from private and public collections.

January 11 – April 28, 2019 at the Tucson Desert Art Museum

January 12, 2019 2 - 4pm Opening Reception and Proclamation by Cochise County in recognition of Effie as a pioneer artist, 55-year resident and her 150th birthday.

March 9, 2019 2pm Talk About Effie: “Dean of Arizona Women Painters” by Columnist Jan Cleere and E.A. Smith Archive Curator, Steven Carlson.

In the midst of the rough and tumble activities of the mining camp in Pearce, Arizona lived a young woman who would emerge as the state’s first nationally known impressionist landscape painter. For over 55 years, Mrs. A.Y. Smith made her home in Cochise County and painted its desert and mountain vistas. The paintings she created of nearby Cochise Stronghold, the Chiricahua Mountains and the Grand Canyon would eventually be seen in exhibits from Phoenix to Philadelphia, and were sought after by politicians and European nobility. Commemorating what would be her 150th birthday year, this exhibition has been made possible by multiple loans from art collectors across the country, Cochise College, Douglas Historical Society, and the efforts of the E.A. Smith Archive. Many of the paintings on view in this retrospective have not been shown publicly in Tucson since the 1930's when E. A. Smith achieved international fame for her colorful impressions of the Grand Canyon and the Southern Arizona desert.

The Tucson Desert Art Museum, a non-profit museum, is on the east side of Tucson. Our mission is to display art and artifacts of the Desert Southwest, and educate our guests about the history, cultures, and art of the region.

Photos of artwork are available. Steven Carlson is also available for interviews.
