FELIDAE is the culmination of a three decade love affair with wild cats. It began in 1989 with sparring tigers at the Los Angeles Zoo. From that moment Fred Hood was hooked; the cat family (Felidae) became an obsession. In the ensuing thirty years he has visited over 100 zoological parks throughout the United States and Europe. Hood has photographed more than two thirds of all known cat species, both adults and cubs. Some of his photos are used by conservation groups to further their mission.

In this series Hood is stripping things down to basic elements. A tight portrait replaces a full body shot. A dark vignette replaces a busy background. Black and white replaces color. This simplified approach creates an intimacy rarely seen in wildlife photographs. The animal becomes an individual and the viewer becomes a friend.
